In the spotlight

The project HyTruck helps public authorities designing a network of hydrogen refuelling stations for large trucks, bringing the Baltic Sea region closer to zero–emissions in road freight transport.

Project summary

The EU Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation requires member states to provide for hydrogen refuelling infrastructure along the so called TEN-T core network by end of 2030.
Although the date is already close, there are still a lot of questions to be resolved, for instance:

  • What Technology is best suited for long distance heavy duty transport?
  • Under which conditions and when hydrogen becomes competitive as a fuel for heavy-duty transport?
  • How to coordinate the deployment of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure between members states avoiding spatial gaps?
  • How to simplify permission procedures?
  • How to incentivise first movers?

Against these uncertainties, HyTruck supported public authorities in planning the development of a transnational network of GREEN hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) suited for heavy-duty vehicles trucks.
By engaging regional and national public authorities, scientific institutions, small and medium enterprises as well as business support institutions in a triple helix approach, HyTruck delivered essential impulses.

HyTruck Tools to help planners and strategists

  • the Spatial Planning Toolkit developed at University of Tartu aids decision makers in planning locations for hydrogen refueling stations,
  • the H2 Marketplace developed by Localiser RLI is supporting infrastructure planners, technology providers and service companies to publish their offers and requests related to products along the entire hydrogen value chain.
  • Environmental and Economical Feasibility Studies performed by Chalmers University of Technology and Research Institutes of Sweden looked into the carbon footprint, economic feasibility from an energy system as well from a production-distribution system perspective for different technological set-ups.
  • the Catalogue of technical norms and standards for hydrogen refuelling stations developed by the Polish Association for New Mobility compiles the key technical standards and norms for hydrogen refuelling stations dedicated to heavy-duty transport.
  • the HyTruck Guideline for planning hydrogen refueling stations in the Baltic Sea region developed by Reiner Lemoine Institute facilitates a better understanding of the hydrogen-ecosystem in heavy-duty transport: from identifying suitable locations for HRS to connecting stakeholders, securing funding, and assessing costs.

Regional and transnational development concepts for HRS in the Baltic Sea Region

Successful transfer of solutions

  • Facilitated by CLIC Innovation Oy, HyTruck organised altogether 24 breakfast briefings reaching out to 300 subcribers in 20 countries with an average participation of 50 persons per breakfast briefing,
  • Via the One-Stop-Shop, set-up by Localiser RLI, all HyTruck results as well as supporting material can be accessed easily.

Partners committed to continue collaboration

Facilitated by the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania, HyTruck partners concluded a memorandum of understanding. Partners committed themselves to
1️⃣Provide access to relevant information about hydrogen-related activities and developments in heavy-duty transport within the partnership and with the public
2️⃣ Share the planning tools and methodologies from the HyTruck project for developing a hydrogen refueling station network
3️⃣ Advocate for the harmonization of standards and procedures among partner countries of origin
4️⃣ Endorse hydrogen technology adoption in heavy-duty transport sector
5️⃣ Cooperate with stakeholders in respective countries of Baltic Sea Region
6️⃣ Participate in coordination meetings and working groups to fulfill these commitments
