European Territorial Cooperation

What is Interreg?

Interreg, known as European Territorial Cooperation, is one of the two goals of the EU Cohesion Policy. Interreg contributes to a harmonious economic, social and territorial development of the Union as a whole. It provides a framework for working across borders for partners from different Member States in the European Union and beyond.

20+ years of Interreg

In the sixth programming period 2021-2027, Interreg has been endowed with a budget of €8 billion from the European Regional Development Fund. This funding brings public and private partners together in four strands of cooperation.

Why Interreg?

Environmental, technological and social matters do not stop at geopolitical frontiers. This often creates challenges that affect citizens on all sides. Interreg helps find and implement solutions to these shared challenges and take stock of new opportunities as they arise: one project at a time. Through cooperation among professionals, public officials and academics, Europe is growing together, as no border should ever prevent the exchange of resources, ideas and knowledge.

More than 100 Interreg programmes, more than 25,000 partners in almost 7,500 projects have been shaping Europe in the past seven years. Now, the sixth generation of programmes with fresh funding will help continue making a greener, smarter, more connected and social Europe that is closer to citizens. Interreg also actively strengthens governance, safety and security in regions.
