Circular economy and ecodesign are all about smart, innovative and sustainable design solutions with minimal or no waste when a product is consumed. An exhibition set up jointly by design centres from around the Baltic Sea and the German Environment Agency showcases successful examples for ecodesign in order to inspire other designers and consumers. With this exhibition, the Interreg project EcoDesign Circle fosters European integration for a more competitive Europe.

Mission to heal
Bone fractures are among the top ten reasons for people to spend time in a hospital across the Baltic Sea region. Bone fractures and health disorders linked to them will occur more frequently because of our ageing society. Implants can break. Fractures can get infected. And some fractures even never heal. The Baltic Fracture Competence Centre enables companies to develop new and better products. And it helps hospitals to identify best clinical practise so that patients stay in hospital shorter, get longer lasting implants and suffer from fewer complications. Partners from the medical industry, hospitals, research and treatment set up a transnational bone fracture registry as a basis for identifying clinical needs.
Fight against contamination: Hazard in Hamburg
An inland waterway vessel collides with a tanker causing an oil leek and release of huge quantities of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. Apart from the crews, 75 people working at the nearby refinery get affected and flee the area leaving an open radioactive source behind. Contamination as a possible danger in seaports was picked up by the HAZARD project to exercise procedures, communication, and cooperation among rescue services, local authorities and private companies.
Wind power provides local jobs – a study from Blekinge, Sweden
Turning our societies from fossil fuels to renewable energies brings numerous changes in our landscapes: solar panels along highways, large rapeseed fields, wind turbines’ red lights blinking throughout the night. When designating areas for renewable energy...

Let´s make the Baltic Sea Region a better place for seniors
It is said that people lose one cm of their height with every decade after turning 40. At some point, a favourite cup placed in the kitchen’s upper cupboard can become out of reach and a comfortable armchair is suddenly too high. These and other physical limitations may appear trivial to a young and healthy 20-year-old but they are a real challenge to an elderly person who wants to stay independent as long as possible.
Jointly restoring inland shipping in the Baltic Sea Region
A single river barge can carry 40 times the load of a truck. CO2 emissions per ton cargo are up to four times lower for barges than for trucks. And transportation costs are up to six times lower. Despite the obvious benefits in terms of costs and environment, inland waterway transport in the EU accounts for only about 7 % of cargo transport. After some decades of very little development in the Baltic Sea region, inland shipping has gained momentum lately. Baltic Sea region countries are now catching up and making their joint voice heard in European transport politics – in the project EMMA.
How to stimulate BIO- & circular economy in the Baltic Sea Region
Innovations are always driven by demand. However, achieving an effective management and implementation of innovative solutions as part of regions’ smart specialisation strategies are not as simple as that. They require support from the public sector, strong backup in research and enterprises ready to take on the initiative.
Coping with emergencies at seaports
1,000 kg of ammonia was accidentally released into the atmosphere. The incident took place at the warehouse in the Port of Turku and caused a real threat to the workers and people waiting for the ferry at the nearby Tallink Silja passenger terminal.
Diving and saving lives with the DIVESMART Baltic project
During an accident at sea the initial search and rescue hours are vital - minutes saved are lives saved - especially in an underwater environment. This video shows how rescue divers of the Stockholm police, fire brigades and coast guard exercise together. Jonas...
