CommitClimate Workshop In Jokkmokk: Exploring Local Climate Solutions

29 Jan 2025

How can small changes in our daily lives contribute to a more sustainable future? This was the key question during our recent CommitClimate workshop, where citizens had the opportunity to explore climate actions using the CommitClimate Simulator and the Footprint Calculator.

“It was interesting to use the CommitClimate Simulator to reflect on the climate situation in our municipality. Small changes can really make a difference – and we are not too late. What we do today affects our future and that of future generations!” – Eva Öhlund Westerberg, Jokkmokk

The workshop focused on two main areas: energy efficiency in buildings and transport. Participants quickly discovered that while improving home energy efficiency saves a lot of energy, it has a relatively small impact on CO₂ emissions in Jokkmokk due to the municipality’s already low-carbon heating sources. In contrast, reducing fossil fuel use in transport has a huge effect on emissions—almost enough to meet local climate targets on its own. Using the Footprint Calculator, participants also explored their personal climate impact and tested how lifestyle changes, from transportation choices to food consumption, can contribute to emission reductions.

Key Takeaways from the Workshop:

✔️ Understanding local climate impact – Participants gained insights into how different climate actions affect both energy use and emissions.
✔️ Empowerment to act – Over 65% of participants felt more motivated to engage with the municipality on climate issues after using the simulator.
✔️ Community-level impact – The discussions highlighted how individual and collective actions add up to meaningful change.

By engaging citizens in climate action, we can ensure that the energy transition is both informed and inclusive. Every small step counts – and the time to act is now!
