100 project applications: small enough to handle, big enough to matter!

The third call for small projects closed with 100 submitted applications and a whole lot of ambition. From existing challenges to transnational answers, these initiatives are proving that small can be mighty in the Baltic Sea region.
The third call for small projects in Interreg Baltic Sea Region has just closed, and the energy was palpable. Across the Programme area, applicants from all nine countries joined forces to turn challenges into opportunities, submitting 100 fully fledged applications aimed at enhancing life in small places, rural areas, and communities facing social and economic pressures.
A transnational mix of voicesÂ
The applications brought together 474 partners, a remarkable 49% of them being newcomers, with the largest contributions from Poland, Lithuania, Sweden, and Finland. Priority 1 – Innovative societies – clearly sparked the most interest with 59 entries, while Priority 2 drew a more focused attention with 14 applications. Climate-neutral societies also captured significant attention, with 27 applications exploring new ways to foster sustainability.  Lead applicants came from diverse backgrounds: public authorities, higher education and research institutions, business support organisations, just to name a few. An interesting highlight of the call is that 21% of partners are non-governmental organisations (NGOs). This mix reflects the Programme’s commitment to fresh perspectives and hands-on solutions, combining local knowledge with transnational experience to address cross-sectors challenges.
Less red tape, more results
Small projects make it easier for newcomers—and experienced partners alike—to join the Programme, especially public authorities and NGOs. With a simpler structure and a budget under EUR 500,000 these small projects are designed to deliver real impact with less bureaucracy. With 30 small projects already funded in this programming period, we can’t wait to see the fresh ideas and innovations the new projects will bring to life.
Next steps
Now, the applications are undergoing an admissibility check and a thorough assessment. This will enable the Monitoring Committee in March next year to select the best project applications that most comprehensively address the existing challenges in the region and bring practical solutions for a green and resilient region.
