Climate Neutral Destinations kick-off created a basis for successful cooperation!

10 May 2025
The CliNeDest kick-off meeting was organised on 7-9 May in Helsinki.
Technical details
The meeting gathered to Helsinki all CliNeDest project partners with a key aim to get to know the climate actions in each others’ destinations as well as each other as a person. The meeting brought up different approaches to climate smart tourism development and enabled a deeper discussion on the joint challenges on a road towards carbon neutral travel. The aim of the project is to engage and help tourism companies in developing climate smart business and low carbon visitor experiences. The need to engage also public and other relevant stakeholders in the destinations was highlighted.

The challenge is complex as 50 % of the carbon footprint of global tourism comes solely from the transport. However, our inspirational guest speaker Ed Gillespie encouraged to make brave openings and use the project energy to empower own and also other destinations for a new way of thinking. Ed is the author of ‘Only Planet – a flight-free adventure around the world’ a book about his circumnavigation of the globe without getting on a plane.

The kick-off was successful in discussing the added value of working with eight destinations in the Baltic Sea region to make a change and show the way to others with appealing examples!
