Gearing up for project platforms

Written by Elena Kolosova

In a bid to capitalise on the wealth of projects underway in our region, Interreg Baltic Sea Region is getting ready for a call for project platforms. Project partners will take a closer look at the emerging project results and consolidate them to maximise the impact of the cooperation.

Capitalise projects’ results for a stronger impact

Ongoing Interreg Baltic Sea Region projects cover various thematic fields, all dedicated to fostering a greener and more resilient Baltic Sea region. These projects are actively developing solutions to combat water pollution, promote renewable energy use, foster smart and sustainable urban development, and many more.

To maximise the impact of the projects, Interreg Baltic Sea Region is getting ready for a project platform call to be launched in summer 2024. Project platforms, a capitalisation instrument of the Programme, will bring together projects from Interreg Baltic Sea Region and other funding programmes. Project platforms will consolidate solutions and other results from various projects and empower municipalities, regional councils, ministries, sectoral agencies, and NGOs to better address territorial challenges and influence policy changes effectively by using the collective knowledge of projects.

Mobilise the Programme resources and engage others

An analysis of ongoing projects in Interreg Baltic Sea Region underscored the substantial resources and solutions available for capitalisation across the Programme’s thematic priorities. Strong support from other Interreg programmes and pan-Baltic organisations like UBC, BSSSC, CBSS, VASAB and HELCOM, emphasised the importance of collaboration in addressing key challenges in the region. In addition, the coordinators of the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region viewed project platforms as catalysts for collaboration, knowledge transfer, and policy influence.

The Task Force of the Programme Monitoring Committee recently confirmed that project platforms are an important tool in elevating project results. Project platforms will further increase the capacity of public authorities and influence policy changes.

Bring together project experts to shape the future

As a next step, Interreg Baltic Sea Region is set to host a series of webinars designed to foster collaboration among project partners and transform project results into new opportunities. Kicking off on 23 April, the first webinar will introduce the concept of project platforms and offer insights from advocates of capitalisation of project results. Following this, thematic webinars scheduled for 16, 23, and 24 May will facilitate connections among project peers across the Baltic Sea region, drawing inspiration from the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region and other regional initiatives. These events will provide space to identify potential project partners and exchange initial ideas for project platforms.

A resilient future for coastal communities

In coastal regions around the Baltic Sea, the impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly evident, posing challenges for local communities, businesses, and authorities alike. The BEACH-SOS project aims to confront these challenges head-on, ensuring the sustainability and vitality of beach recreation and tourism in the face of a changing climate. Recently, we had the opportunity to sit down with Rimants Lulis from Saulkrasti Municipality, one of the partners of the project, to discover more about how this project can benefit the municipality and the community in Saulkrasti.
