CirCan
The project platform CirCan provides public authorities and sectoral agencies with consolidated knowledge on nutrient recycling and recovery to support effective nutrient management and reduce pollution from persistent eutrophication. CirCan consolidates results from 14 projects.
The platform addresses nutrient recovery and recycling in the Baltic Sea region, where implementation remains difficult due to the scale and complexity of the challenge. The Baltic Sea Regional Nutrient Recycling Strategy provides a shared framework, but limited capacity and resources continue to slow progress. The platform synthesises solutions on recycled nutrient markets, environmental and social benefits and trade-offs, drawing on recent Interreg, Horizon and national projects. It engages national public authorities and sectoral agencies through existing knowledge-transfer and policy structures, including HELCOM’s Working Group Source to Sea and EUSBSR PA Nutri. This enables authorities to use consolidated evidence in national decision-making and in regional cooperation processes, particularly when designing economic instruments and integrating nutrient recycling into CAP national implementation. The intended change is improved use of existing knowledge and strengthened capacity within national and regional policy frameworks. By supporting more coherent approaches to nutrient circularity, the platform contributes to reduced nutrient losses, a healthier Baltic Sea and more sustainable agricultural systems.
