BaltSusBoating 2030:
Wrap-up of project achievements
Although the Baltic Sea region has more than 1,000 leisure boat harbours and attractive destinations, it still needs to fully unlock its potential for visibility, coordinated marketing, and sustainable growth in boating tourism. The Interreg project BaltSusBoating 2030 responds to this need with a clear action plan and a roadmap that point the way forward.
Project achievements
The project BaltSusBoating 2030 united harbour operators, tourism boards, boating associations, and public authorities to co-create a shared strategic framework for developing sustainable boating in the Baltic Sea region.
The project’s main outputs/solutions:
- A Joint Action Plan until 2030 for developing & promoting the Baltic Sea as a cross-border boating destination
- A Sustainability Roadmap for Baltic Sea Boating, focusing on sustainable marinas, boats, and boater behaviour
Highlights
Joint Action Plan
The Joint Action Plan until 2030 unites the boating sector across the region under a shared vision of the Baltic Sea as a single, sustainable and competitive boating destination. It serves as a “construction kit” of measures that regions, sub-destinations and harbours can adopt and adapt to their local context: from joint marketing and promotional activities to knowledge exchange and various formats of cooperation across borders.
Developed through cooperation among partners in Germany, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, Denmark, and other Baltic Sea countries, the plan draws on surveys, stakeholder workshops, and best-practice research. This transnational process ensured that diverse perspectives shaped a coherent branding strategy for the Baltic Sea as a whole.

7 organisations cooperating across borders
7 organisations directly benefitting from the project solutions
The Action Plan is already delivering results, and follow-up activities are underway. By now, the plan is actively implemented by the Baltic Boating Alliance, which continues to meet regularly and organises joint promotion at international fairs, allowing for coordinated sub-destination presentations at major international fairs.
Sustainability Roadmap
The Sustainability Roadmap guides the boating sector towards greater environmental and social responsibility, focusing on areas: sustainable marinas, sustainable boats, and sustainable boater behaviour. It outlines practical measures for harbour operators, municipalities and associations to reduce environmental impacts, improve infrastructure (e.g. wastewater handling, renewable energy use), and encourage sustainable practices among boaters.
Co-created by partners across the region, the roadmap harmonises diverse approaches into a shared vision for sustainable boating while allowing flexibility for national and local adaptation. It creates space for the exchange of regulatory knowledge, technological approaches, and engagement strategies. It now serves as a common reference for aligning national initiatives with regional goals, while measuring sector-wide progress.

The Roadmap in use
The roadmap has already inspired concrete spin-off initiatives, such as Ecomarinas (piloting wastewater solutions in marinas), MariEx (developing marinas into inclusive maritime experience points), and the Re:Coast initiative (addressing climate adaptation and communication challenges). These projects directly build on the roadmap, ensuring long-term continuity and impact of BaltSusBoating 2030.
Project Wrap-Up
Thanks to Interreg funding and transnational cooperation, BaltSusBoating 2030 has provided the Baltic Sea region with an action plan and roadmap to transform the Baltic Sea into a green and attractive boating destination.
