Cross-border free ESG Tool launched in five languages to support sustainability efforts

08 September 2025
Technical details

From today, a new ESG tool is available to all companies free of charge, supporting companies’ sustainability journeys, risk assessment and reporting. The ESG Tool was developed in cooperation with state authorities and business associations in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland and is available in all these languages, as well as English.

The tool enables entrepreneurs to assess the impact of their company’s operations on the environment, social welfare, and economic sustainability. It helps to map and analyze the companies’ position in ten sustainability-related areas: climate change, pollution, water and marine resources, biodiversity and ecosystems, resource usage and circular economy, labor force, employees in the value chain, affected communities, consumers and end-users, and business conduct.

In addition to the assessment tool, the web platform offers descriptions of sustainability reporting standards, general guidance, educational videos, best practice examples, and links to further resources. The tool also provides tailored recommendations for next steps, simplifying the reporting process and improving data quality.

Most EU countries transposed the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) into their national laws in 2024. The directive requires large companies to regularly report on their social and environmental impact and to share information on how they operate and manage environmental, social and governance issues. In 2025, the reporting obligation for certain large companies was postponed by two years, and legislative changes regarding sustainability reporting are also expected in 2026.

The development of the ESG Tool began in 2023 and is part of a broader initiative aimed at promoting digital innovation and change in the Baltic Sea region. The project is supported by the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme, with a total budget of approximately 3.5 million euros. Project partners include the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications as the lead partner from Estonia, and as partners, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of the Environment, the Environmental Investment Centre, ITL Estonia, and Zero Waste Estonia, DIMECC LTD and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment from Finland, LIKTA and the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development from Latvia, INFOBALT and the Ministry of Economy and Innovation from Lithuania, and WAMA COOP from Poland. The project will conclude on December 31, 2025.

To introduce the ESG Tool, a free webinar will be held on 10 September from 10:00 to 11:30. The session will offer a guided tour of the tool’s key features, a practical step-by-step demonstration on how to assess a company’s ESG profile, and expert advice to support businesses on their sustainability journey.

In September and October, two on-site seminars will be held in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Lithuania. These seminars aim to facilitate hands-on learning and support the practical application of the ESG Tool.
