Why SUMPs are important?  Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) are one of the essential elements for achieving climate neutrality, fostering active mobility, and enhancing the quality of urban life. It ensures a variety of sustainable transport options for the safe, healthy and fluid mobility of people and goods with consideration of residents and the urban environment.

The revised TEN-T regulations, adopted in 2024, emphasize the role of urban nodes in creating sustainable and resilient transport networks across Europe. With the revised TEN-T regulations requiring the adoption and monitoring of SUMPs integrating various transport modes, encouraging zero or low-emission vehicles, and improving overall urban mobility for urban nodes by 2027, cities will face a need to implement these plans effectively.

Looking Ahead The training package is in development, with the first trainings set to launch in Spring 2026. Future opportunities for the cities to gain knowledge on SUMPs will also include:

  • The SUMP Clinic: Offering tailored, one-on-one support for selected cities.
  • The Competence Centre: A collection of tools, resources, best practices and self-learning materials for sustainable mobility planning.
