MUNIMAP at the 4th Mission Arena in Sopot
29 April 2025
Nine R&I projects were presented at the event, all addressing the issue of sunken wrecks and marine munition dumps in the BalticSea region.
The workshop, ‘From Rust to Risk: Removing Wrecks and Munitions from the Baltic,’ showcased diverse risk assessment methods, environmental analysis results, decision-support models, and hands-on experience in activities such as inventorying and removing wrecks and hazardous materials.
The projects presented their scientific and technological approaches, addressing also regulatory and management system divergences among countries in the region. The session also explored opportunities for international cooperation and standard harmonisation, with a particular focus on the role of public education and involving policymakers.
Projects presented:
🔹 BaltWreck – prevention of pollution from hazardous wrecks and munitions in the southern Baltic
🔹 MUNI-RISK – risk assessment related to sunken munitions
🔹 MUNIMAP – modern mapping and hazard classification
🔹 MMinE-SwEEPER – new approaches to explosive ordnance disposal
🔹 REMARCO – risk communication and public awareness
🔹 CONMAR II – marine contamination and military heritage management
🔹 EROVMUS – exploration and cleanup of marinewrecks
🔹 BorDEx – use of robotics in detecting and neutralising explosives
