A special external session of the Polish Senate’s Climate and Environment Committee, along with the Foreign Affairs Committee, was held on 2nd September in Gdynia under the theme “Safety and Protection of Baltic Sea Waters”

The session brought together leading figures from the Polish political scene, including Senate Marshal Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska and 17 senators, as well as invited experts, among them MUNIMAP representatives from the International Centre for Chemical Safety and Security (ICCSS), Institute of Oceanology PAN, the Polish Naval Academy, and the Maritime Office in Gdynia.

Krzysztof Paturej of ICCSS called for an integrated approach to reclassify dumped chemical weapons as hazardous waste. In this way they would be taken out of the jurisdiction of the Chemical Weapons Convention which would allow for quicker and more effective management.

Arkadiusz Marchewka, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Infrastructure, announced plans to implement actions aimed at neutralizing hazardous waste in the Baltic Sea, especially in the area of planned offshore wind farms.

After reviewing expert opinions and discussions, the Climate and Environment Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee adopted a joint position, emphasizing the need for decisive actions by state and international bodies to protect the Baltic Sea. They advocated for reclassifying underwater chemical weapons as hazardous materials and called for concrete measures, including monitoring, identifying, and removing these threats.
