Final Seminar in Sweden
11 June 2025
Final Seminar Mobile Hospital Sweden
Organized by: Karolinska University Hospital and Karolinska Institutet
Participants: Nurses and doctors from the pediatric section of Karolinska University Hospital,
researchers from Karolinska InstitutetSpeakers: Gunilla Lööf, Louise Kendrick, Nico Arnold, Anna Svenningsson, Annika Wallin
The main purpose of this seminar was to present the new 360-degree Mobile Hospital
application — a digital tool designed to help children and their families prepare for hospital
visits in an interactive, engaging, and informative way. The app allows users to virtually
explore hospital environments, learn about medical procedures, and reduce anxiety related
to upcoming care.
The seminar format encouraged simultaneous interaction: participants actively used the
Mobile Hospital app on their own devices during the presentations. This hands-on approach
allowed nurses, doctors, and researchers to experience the app first-hand and directly
reflect on how it could be integrated into their clinical practice.
In addition to showcasing the Mobile Hospital app, the seminar explored a range of digital
strategies for preparing children for medical procedures, including written information,
videos, and Virtual Reality (VR), all aimed at supporting a more positive hospital experience
for young patients.
Conclusion
The seminar successfully introduced the Mobile Hospital app as a promising digital tool to
improve the preparation and emotional well-being of pediatric patients and their families.
The interactive format, where participants explored the app in real time, provided valuable
practical insights and inspired many ideas for clinical use. Healthcare staff saw numerous
opportunities to integrate the app in everyday practice — during phone admission
interviews, in appointment letters, on hospital websites, on tablets during outpatient visits
and hospital stays, and even in emergency situations where last-minute preparation can still
be beneficial. Staff particularly valued the app’s clear visuals, child-friendly design, and
engaging interactive features, such as the animated giraffe guide and short educational
videos. They highlighted the app’s potential to foster dialogue between children, parents,
and healthcare professionals, and to encourage children to take an active role in preparing
for their hospital experience. At the same time, feedback pointed to clear opportunities for
future development — including improving the AI voice, expanding the content to cover
more procedures, enhancing navigation, and offering additional language options. Overall,
the app is seen as a flexible, easy-to-use complement to existing preparation methods, with
strong potential to enhance patient-centered care and to make hospital visits less
intimidating and more understandable for children
