On September 27, European Researchers’ Night 2024, the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology (LHEI) introduced the project to wider audiences. LHEI presented their current research topics and projects at Daugavpils University, which gathered around 2500 visitors, making it one of the five most visited institutions during the event in Latvia.

Learning about the Baltic Sea and Sustainable Water Management

At LHEI’s stand visitors could learn about ecology of the Baltic Sea and Latvian freshwaters. Additionally, they were informed about eutrophication and how gypsum treatment on agricultural lands can improve the state of receiving water bodies. Both children and adults had the chance to inspect the structure of local natural gypsum under a microscope and learn about environmentally friendly initiatives by playing the game “Circus”. Visitors could also to take home a brochure containing more information of the GYPREG project.
Participation in these kind of events is an important way to reach out to people  and increase public awareness of the project and the science-based solutions used for sustainable natural resource management.
