Exploring the Use of By-product Gypsum from a Local Latvian Company

The representatives of GYPREG project in Latvia were invited to a local company producing gypsum as a by-product. The aim of the visit was to investigate the possibilities to use this gypsum in agricultural fields.

On August 1st, representatives from the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology and of Farmers’ Parliament (“Zemnieku Saeima”) met with local officials of the Latvian company Valmiera Glass, Ltd (“VALMIERAS STIKLA ŠĶIEDRA, AS”).

The aim of the visit was to investigate whether gypsum, a by-product of the manufacturing process of the company, might be used by farmers to enhance phosphorus retention in agricultural fields. The initiative for the meeting came from the company.

 

During the visit, scientists, representatives of the Farmers’ Parliament and industry officials, shared information about the GYPREG Project, and discussed possibilities for collaboration.  The visit paved the way towards increased cooperation, aiming to develop more productive and environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
