Partners met in Latvia to finalize the project outputs

03 April 2025
From April 1 to April 2, partners of the “GreenIndustrialAreas” project visited Latvia to analyze the results achieved so far and explore the development opportunities of the Kaigu Bog green industrial zone
Technical details

The pilot phase has now concluded, and the insights gained allow for further work on developing the unified certification criteria. To discuss the achieved results and visit Latvian pilot area, international project partners arrived in Latvia for a two-day visit.

On the first day of the meeting, held at the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development (VARAM), partners analyzed progress made so far and discussed guidelines for the green certification of industrial zones. Participants joined thematic working groups to discuss project publicity and mechanisms for raising awareness of green industrial zones. Other topics included the integration of project results into national development plans and the implementation of green industrial zone certification systems.

On the second day, partners visited the Kaigu Bog industrial zone, where they explored the pilot area and its development opportunities. The company “Laflora” specializes in peatland management, which includes sustainable peat extraction, the production of high-value-added horticultural peat products. However, the company is also implementing an ambitious project—developing one of the largest wind farms in Latvia, which will generate approximately 5% of the country’s total annual electricity consumption.

According to company representative Sabīna Alta, the electricity produced will enable the development of the green industrial zone in Kaigu Bog, allowing not only “Laflora” to achieve climate neutrality but also contributing to the climate-neutral development of the entire Zemgale region.

Currently, active construction work is underway, including the development and renovation of access roads to the future wind farm. The green industrial zone, covering more than 120 hectares, will be gradually developed over the next ten years. Plans for the “Laflora” green industrial zone include a greenhouse complex, a sustainable innovation center for the development of innovative peat products, an industrial center, a data center, and modern office spaces. More information about the company’s development plans can be found on their website: https://laflora.lv

The visit concluded with a project planning session, where key takeaways from the meeting and future cooperation directions were presented. The final conference of the GreenIndustrialAreas project is scheduled to take place in Schwerin, Germany at the end of November this year.
