Artic meets Baltic in Lulea, Sweden

GlassCircle project partners meet in the event “Artic meet Baltic: Composite materials mini-conference”.
Technical details

Firstly, event participants introduced themselves and the organizations coming from, presented accomplished and ongoing research projects, discussed possible future collaboration. A tour to the Lulea University of Technology laboratories by host Roberts Joffe was organized. Secondly, event participants visited GlassCircle project partners located closely to Lulea city – Podcomp Ab and Hitachi Energy Sweden AB, Composites (HPAG). Podcomp Ab produces bathroom units from glass fiber composite materials. The sustainability coordinator at Podcomp Ab, Birgitha Nyström, guided all event participants through the production of bathroom units starting from separate composite material sheet production and ending with bathroom unit assembling. Glass fiber waste generated during the production process was analyzed. Possible solutions like glass fiber waste material use in other products (outdoor furniture, ski sticks, canoe boats etc.) reviewed. Tour at Hitachi Energy Sweden AB, Composites (HPAG) was guided by engineering manager, Anders Holmberg. Hitachi Energy Sweden AB produces insulators used in electrical equipment to support and separate electrical conductors without allowing current to pass through the insulators. Insulators are produced from glass fiber composites by utilizing winding technology. In this way ensuring a wide range of insulators capable to produce. During the tour at Hitachi Energy Sweden AB, Composites (HPAG) glass fiber and other types of wastes made during the production were evaluated. Selection of glass fiber waste material for the coming hackathon event organized within GlassCircle project was accomplished. At the end of the day branch of RISE (Research Institute of Sweden) was visited located next to both aforementioned factories. The head of the unit, Peter Mannberg, gave an insight into RISE activities, laboratory testing and prototyping facilities.
