Technical details

On January 31, 2025, Primary School No. 61 in Gdańsk played host to an innovative workshop focused on valorizing school bio-waste through composting.

FoodLoops project is dedicated to supporting and facilitating the separation of unavoidable bio‐waste at its source and transforming it into value‐added products—most notably compost—to help close the resource loop. In line with this objective, our partner, the Gdańsk Municipality, recently conducted a hands‐on workshop with students at School No. 61 to educate them about bio‐waste valorisation through composting. During the workshop, a dedicated composter was installed on campus, and an initial monitoring visit assessed its performance. A follow‐up visit is planned to evaluate the composting process further and verify the production of high‐quality compost that can be reintegrated into local soil and gardening initiatives.

The session, led by Filip Golebiewski—a BioFarmLab expert, architect, farmer, inventor, and Soil Food Web School graduate—sought to develop a tailored composting model for the benefit of the school and its wider community.

Representatives from the school joined approximately 50 students from various classes in this hands-on event. Filip Golebiewski introduced the children to the concepts of composting and the soil food web, highlighting the benefits of composting and demonstrating effective techniques to achieve optimal results. The students actively engaged in the process, building their compost layer by layer while interacting with the expert throughout the session.

The workshop concluded with the assembly of a simple composter, a project that left all participants highly satisfied with their achievement. Plans are already underway for a follow-up visit to monitor the compost pit’s performance.
