Technical details

Gdańsk, 6 November 2024 – A workshop focused on the circular food system and bio-waste composting was held at the Municipal Utilisation Company Ltd. for school managers, administrators, and nature teachers from five local schools interested in establishing their own bio-composters. These composting systems aim to produce biocompost for educational purposes and for growing flowers and herbs.

The event welcomed 19 participants, including Sebastian Kozlowski, Vice President of the Management Board of the Municipal Utility Company Ltd., who provided insights into the company’s initiatives. Following an overview of the FoodLoops project, specialists from the Municipal Utilisation Company Ltd.—including Production Director Jacek Wojda-Gburek, Head of the Biological Processing Department Krzysztof Cichon, and Head of the Waste Management Department Magdalena Wawrzyniak—delivered presentations on various composting processes and relevant legislation regarding composting rights and obligations.

The workshop covered strategies for improving bio-waste segregation in school kitchens and canteens, along with practical methods for converting food waste into compost. This theoretical knowledge paved the way for a vibrant discussion about the readiness of schools to implement their own composting systems and the potential uses for the compost produced.

At the conclusion of the meeting, school representatives expressed their initial commitment to establishing biocomposting facilities on their premises. Additionally, discussions initiated with a representative from the Generation Foundation centered on integrating food waste awareness into the Clean City Gdańsk educational programme, which has been active since 2019. This collaboration aims to enhance educational efforts on sustainability across local schools.
