Pornainen municipality in Finland steps into the vision of local climate and energy futures
07 April 2026
Located 45 minutes from Helsinki, Pornainen is a rural municipality with a population of around five thousand people. Even though small in size, the Pornainen municipality is eager to foster more climate-neutral futures through the development of a dedicated climate and energy action plan. In Pornainen, one of the key challenges is finding a balance between its small population and ambitions, particularly in the transportation sector, as residents are car-dependent due to the lack of accessible, adequate public transport.Â
Key measures of the envisioned Pornainen Climate and Energy Action Plan:
– Energy community in an industrial business park,
– Waste heat and heat storage,
– Fostering biofuel production locally,
– Upscaling the use of renewable electricity in the region,
– Supporting innovative frameworks for transportation sector decarbonisation,Â
Subsequently, these and other elements of the climate and energy planning will be addressed within a diverse group of practitioners and local representatives. Follow the journey of the Pornainen municipality in developing the Municipal Energy and Climate Action Plan!Â
As the Enercracy project moves into its second year, the theoretical becomes practical. During the next twelve months, the knowledge compiled in the Draft Model Catalogue of Measures for Energy Plans will be actively used to develop or update municipal climate and energy plans to enable energy communities and prosumerism, as well as to upscale the use of renewable energy. This article series highlights each municipality participating in piloting the Catalogue to enable local energy democracies. Pornainen municipality, together with the Green Net Finland and the Finnish National Work Group, developed within the Enercracy project, is responsible for developing the Pornainen Energy and Climate Action Plan.Â
