Dobele County in Latvia dives headfirst into municipal climate and energy planning

Situated in central Latvia, Dobele County has a population of 27.5 thousand residents. As a key agricultural hub in Latvia, Dobele County is an important area of transformation towards sustainable and climate-neutral energy systems. Zemgale, the planning region where Dobele County is located, is also characterised by the rapid development of renewable energy infrastructure, such as Dobele SES industrial solar park, as well as smaller solar plants, including municipal companies providing solar power for water treatment plants. Subsequently, the energy visions for Dobele County reflect this combination of historical value chains rooted in agriculture, together with the green energy transition.Â
Key measures of the envisioned Dobele County Climate and Energy Plan:
– Fostering prosumerism and decentralised energy production from renewable sources,
– Continue and upscale the emergence of energy communities in the region,
– Enabling the political will for stronger commitments to energy transition.Â
Subsequently, these and other elements of the climate and energy planning will be addressed within a diverse group of practitioners and local representatives. Follow the journey of the Dobele county municipality in developing the Municipal Energy and Climate Action Plan!Â
As the Enercracy project moves into its second year, the theoretical becomes practical. During the next twelve months, the knowledge compiled in the Draft Model Catalogue of Measures for Energy Plans will be actively used to develop or update municipal climate and energy plans to enable energy communities and prosumerism, as well as to upscale the use of renewable energy. This article series highlights each municipality participating in piloting the Catalogue to enable local energy democracies. Dobele County municipality, together with the Zemgale Regional Energy Agency and the Latvian National Work Group, developed within the Enercracy project, is responsible for developing the Dobele County Energy and Climate Action Plan.Â
