Testing Reusable Packaging at Markets

As part of the Change(K)now! project, innovative reusable systems have been tested at the market stalls of the Mediterranean delicatessen retailer Suri Signature on Goldbekufer and Isemarkt in Hamburg, Germany, since October 2024 in order to reduce single-use packaging and promote more sustainable shopping processes and circularity.

By comparing different reusable systems, the project hopes to gather valuable insights into customer acceptance, manageability, and long-term feasibility. The broader mission is to encourage municipalities, businesses, and consumers to embrace waste reduction and take a step toward a greener future.

Promising Results So Far

A few months in, the results are more than encouraging. A recent evaluation by Suri Signature GmbH, Kiel University, and the Baltic Environmental Forum Deutschland e.V. has shown significant progress:

  • Reusable use on the rise: 35% of customers are now opting for reusable packaging or bringing their own containers—a 30% increase since the start of the pilot!
  • Overwhelmingly positive feedback: 88% of users rate the reusable system as superior to disposable packaging, citing environmental benefits (80%), effective information campaigns (72%), and attractive incentives like discounts (65%).
  • Growing environmental awareness: Both customers and sales staff are increasingly engaged in sustainable shopping, showing greater demand for eco-friendly solutions.

Looking Ahead

This pilot is so far proving that reusable systems can be both practical and well-received in market settings. “Our pioneering role is not only appreciated by our customers, but also strengthens our market position and customer loyalty,” says Jahan Khodagholi, a member of the Suri Signature team.

Plans are already in place to expand the initiative, ensuring reusable packaging remains a viable option for Hamburg’s markets. With growing awareness, positive customer feedback, and continued business support, this project is setting a foundation for reducing packaging waste and promoting more sustainable shopping habits.

Further updates on the project’s development will be provided in the coming months.
