Hamburg Airport orders first series of hydrogen-powered baggage tractors

10 June 2026
Technical details

After a successful pilot phase in real airport operations, Hamburg Airport is now taking the next step:

The first series of hydrogen-powered baggage tractors have been ordered.

The vehicle proved its performance under real-world conditions, demonstrating reliable operation in all seasons, sufficient range for a full shift and seamless integration into existing processes. It also showed strong towing performance, sometimes exceeding that of comparable natural gas vehicles.

The solution is based on an innovative retrofit approach, converting existing baggage tractors to hydrogen drive. Developed together with HTM – Hydro Technology Motors, the hydrogen combustion engine helps extend vehicle lifecycles while reducing emissions.
With the first series conversions now underway, Hamburg Airport is also advancing hydrogen infrastructure, including a flexible container-based refueling station.
