BSR HyAirport partners meet in Kiruna to prepare for the project’s final phase

In early September 2026, the partners of the BSR HyAirport project gathered in Kiruna, Sweden, for a partnership meeting hosted by Swedavia. With less than two months remaining until the end of the project, the meeting focused on reviewing progress and preparing for the project closure phase.

Throughout the meeting, the project partners presented updates from all working groups covering legal framework, hydrogen supply chains, aircraft handling, airport equipment and business cases. Discussions highlighted the significant progress made across the partnership and the successful implementation of several pilot activities that are helping airports across the Baltic Sea Region prepare for the future use of hydrogen in aviation. Further preparations have been made for the upcoming second BSR HyAirport project conference, which will take place in Riga on 14 October 2026.

On the second day, the participants had the opportunity to visit LKAB, Europe’s largest iron ore producer. The visit provided additional insights into hydrogen-related developments and highlighted the importance of hydrogen technologies for the green transition across different sectors.

As the project approaches its conclusion, the Kiruna meeting demonstrated the strong commitment of all partners to delivering practical results and supporting the transition towards more sustainable airport operations. The final months will focus on completing the evaluation of piloting activities, and sharing the knowledge generated through BSR HyAirport with airports, policymakers and industry stakeholders across Europe.
