Internationalisation starts before your first export
01 July 2026
Many businesses think internationalisation begins when they find their first customer abroad.
Our experience in the BSR Go-abroad project showed something different.
Successful internationalisation starts much earlier.
It starts with understanding your own business.
During the project, we worked with 258 micro-SMEs across the Baltic Sea Region and one lesson became clear:
Before entering new markets, companies need to know:
✔ who their customers really are,
✔ what makes their offer unique,
✔ whether they have enough internal capacity,
✔ and if they are truly ready to scale internationally.
Without these foundations, international expansion often becomes expensive, chaotic and difficult to sustain.
That’s why one of the first recommendations in our Blueprint is simple:
Build a strong business before building an international business.
