Technical details

On September 26th, Game Habitat hosted a hands-on half-day online workshop designed to empower non-male game developers across Europe to step confidently into mentorship roles within the games industry.
The mentor training session, titled “Stepping into the Mentorship Role with Confidence,” was facilitated by Albertina Sparrhult, Leadership Coach and Change Management Consultant. Broadcast live from Malmö in Game Habitat’s hybrid studio, the training offered a dynamic and engaging experience with professional-quality sound, video, and interactive tools. The full online format enabled us to offer the training to a wide audience across the European/Baltic games industry, as the participants was not limited to travel to Malmö, Sweden to partake.
17 participants joined via Zoom for group discussions and smaller breakout sessions, while Miro was used for collaborative exercises and guided learning. The session also included a live mentoring demonstration, providing participants with a practical example of the tools and techniques discussed.

The workshop explored key mentoring concepts and frameworks, helping attendees:

  • Understand the difference between mentoring and coaching

  • Build trust and rapport with mentees

  • Facilitate goal setting and reflective conversations

  • Share knowledge effectively

  • Practice active listening and deepen engagement

  • Navigate the five stages of the mentoring journey

Through invitations shared broadly via the League members, the workshop brought together women in mentoring or leadership roles from various studios within the European games industry. Its goal was to strengthen diversity, inclusion, and equality by empowering participants with practical tools for mentorship, leadership, and professional growth.
The training was free to attend, supported by the BSG-Go project, and received excellent feedback from participants, who stayed highly engaged throughout the session. Their reflections and energy throughout the session – but also in the feedback survey following the workshop – underscored the success of creating an impactful, interactive learning experience – even in an online format. Since the workshop was fully designed to run online (and not hybrid or onsite), all individuals could join on the same basis and fully interact with each other and the facilitator on the same conditions.

It was clear that the session exceeded expectations from those who joined, and that making connections with other developers from various locations and therefore an expanded European network was an appreciated bonus.
