Toksika Hackathon Launch Webinar Sets the Stage for Innovative Soil Bioremediation Solutions
03 March 2025
The event commenced with an introduction to the BioBoosters Concept by Anna Aalto from Jyväskylä University of Applied Science, outlining the initiative’s mission to accelerate bio-based innovations through collaborative challenge-based programs.
Following this, UAB Toksika representative Danielius Šeštokas shared The Toksika Story, providing an overview of the company’s role in hazardous waste management and its commitment to developing sustainable remediation technologies.
A key highlight of the webinar was the Presentation of the Challenge of the Toksika Hackathon, delivered by Rimas Meištininkas. He detailed the main problem statement: finding effective and scalable methods to accelerate heavy petroleum fractions-contaminated soil biological treatment while preserving essential microbial life. This challenge serves as the focal point for hackathon participants, who will work on innovative bioremediation solutions.
Several expert presentations provided critical insights into the latest advancements in soil treatment methodologies:
- Baltic Phytoremediation – Solutions for Contaminated Soils – Gintaras Šiaudinis (Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry) discussed the potential of phytoremediation, a plant-based approach to soil detoxification.
- Phy2Climate Project: Remediation of Petroleum Polluted Soil – Markus Ortner (ITS Förderberatung, Austria) shared insights from the EU-funded Phy2Climate project, focusing on sustainable soil decontamination strategies.
- Soil Bioremediation: Enhancing Microbial Activity with Bio-Stimulants – Michal Slota (UAB Nando) presented cutting-edge approaches to stimulating microbial activity for more efficient biodegradation of pollutants.
The Toksika Hackathon presents an opportunity for startups, researchers, and industry professionals to collaborate on sustainable solutions for one of the most pressing environmental challenges in waste management. Participants will have access to expert mentorship and the chance to develop viable, impactful technologies for real-world application.
Applications for the hackathon are now open, with teams encouraged to submit their innovative proposals. For more details, visit the official hackathon page: https://ssmtp.lt/hakatonai/toksika-hackathon/.
