Skellefteå Kraft Hackathon "Track the Stack" is now open – apply now!

02 October 2024
Skellefteå Kraft aims to digitalize 500,000 tons of biomass to gain control over energy content and inventory at their combined heat and power plants. They want to replace the current measurement technology from 1994 with today's available technologies. Do you have a solution? The challenge was launched on September 30 during an international webinar. The application is open until October 30.
Technical details

Video about the challenge.

Skellefteå Kraft is Sweden’s fifth-largest energy company. They deliver 1 TWh of district heating in Skellefteå and inland Västerbotten. The raw material used to produce the heat is primarily forest-based residual products, and approximately 500,000 tons of biomass are handled annually. Data on their biomass is currently collected partly manually and partly through automated systems. The data is used to calculate the energy value of the biomass, inventory balance, deliveries, and to track placement.

What is Skellefteå Kraft looking for?

A modern, cost-effective, and robust method to increase the digitalization and traceability of biomass. The goal of automation and digitalization is to gain better control of statistics, inventory, and invoices.

In brief:
• Accurate and updated physical and geometrical data about biomass piles in a digital format. For example, weight, moisture, volume, compaction/density, particle size, and geographical location.
• Alerts for significant or dangerous changes in and around the piles. For example, fire risk or unauthorized access.

What does Skellefteå Kraft offer you?

The hackathon is not just a competition but also an opportunity for participants to find partners to solve a complex challenge. The best ideas can lead to long-term collaborations with Skellefteå Kraft.

Winners will have the opportunity to test their solution in a joint proof of concept or collaborate on a pilot project. The result will be announced in connection with an upcoming procurement.

All selected finalists will have the opportunity to:
• Establish collaborations and network with other companies and specialists
• Receive direct feedback from a potential customer
• Develop the commercialization potential of your idea with the support of expert mentors
• Gain international visibility

Skellefteå Kraft Hackathon is part of the international BioBoosters project led by Jamk University of Applied Sciences and co-funded by the Interreg Baltic Sea Program. BioBoosters, which brings together nine bioeconomy innovation networks from the Baltic Sea countries, including Finland, Sweden, the Baltic States, Poland, and Germany. The project organizes 18 Hackathons that support the responsible business and circular economy transition of bioeconomy companies.
