A new report from the Interreg Baltic Sea Region project BEST ACE map out the current market situation for biogas in the region. The report shows that the circumstances vary quite a lot between countries but that there is also a substantial potential for biogas in the future.

The State of play report from BEST ACE focuses on the market situation of biomethane in the sectors of long-haul vehicles, maritime traffic, industry applications, and input to gas grids. This is done by mapping of this in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, and Sweden.

This report is very important for the progress of the project and will serve as the foundation for the final result which will be a roadmap for the future of biogas in the region, says Tommy Lindström, Energy Agency Southern Sweden, lead partner of BEST ACE.

The potential for biogas looks good in all mapped countries in the region, but the infrastructure and possibilities vary. For example has the industry in Finland and Sweden several projects in connection to biogas while both Estonia and Latvia lack this. On the other hand, Estonia and Latvia has a gas grid infrastructure and neither Finland nor Sweden can match.

The mapping of the current situation highlights potential possibilities and obstacles on national level for the development of biogas. But this is only one part of the contribution, says Ida Norberg, BioFuel Region, lead author of the report. By charting up different sectors like this it also becomes clearer that there will be challenges to establish joint regulations on EU level that are not favoring individual countries.

The biogas potential is big in all four countries and the European Union has pointed out biomethane as a key component in both REPower EU and Fit for 55.
