BaMuR questionnaire

The purpose of the survey was to find out what museums and memory institutions did during the crises, what problems they encountered and what solutions did they come up with, both successful, temporary and failed.

The questionnaire was distributed by all partners for 3 weeks.

The aim was to have at least 50 responses from cultural and heritage organisations in the Baltic Sea Region, provisionally ten from each of the countries. The number of responses exceeded our expectations are we received altogether 76 answers:

• 16 from Estonia
• 13 from Finland
• 11 from Lithuania
• 16 from Poland
• 20 from Sweden

The ownership of the responding museums (national, state owned and established foundations, regional, local, private, others) was diverse. All types of museums answered in all five countries. The administrative and legal regulations in the countries differ, so there are inevitable differences in how a respondent may be qualified in one or another country. But this does not affect the overall picture – the respondents varied a lot.

As the size and population of the participating countries differs considerably (and so the definitions concerning the size of the museum), the similar applied also for the responding museums. Museums in all sizes participated in the survey.

The majority of museums in all countries had been operational for several decades, but there were also some newly established organisations.

Thus, we may conclude that the respondents provided a fair representation of the museums in the countries concerned.
