Evaluating the Library at Aarhus University, Herning

Technical details

Following the inauguration of the library in Herning we started the process of evaluating
how the new space was received by its users.

While the students quickly returned to the new space the official evaluation process
started with three workshops in the datalab within the library. Primarily targeting students,
the workshops consisted of a hands-on introduction to a popular transcription tool as well
as an informal feedback session. The feedback session addressed both the content of the
workshop and the students’ general experience with the new library space. This
conversational format allowed the students to share what they liked and did not like about
the new library space and express any concerns or wishes they had for the space in the
future. The workshops were supplemented by smaller-scale individual counseling offered
to groups of students who were not able to attend the workshops at the scheduled times.

The feedback sessions were followed by a survey. The survey consisted of a number of
ratings and questions adapted from the UKH Toolbox. During their stay, visitors to the
library were encouraged to fill in the survey and submit it to a box.

Afterwards, the input from both activities was structured and analyzed. Combined, these
feedback activities provided a wide array of input consisting of appreciation, concerns,
and suggestions; some of which required only minor adjustments while others were
integrated into the long-term development of the library space.

While the feedback sessions provided detailed insights into individual experiences with the
library, the survey illuminated the ways users interact and engage with the library space
and services in broader strokes. Input from both methods will be used to direct the future
development of the library and the evaluation process wraps up the local activities in
Herning within the BALTIC UKH framework.
