Tampere Future Arena of Sustainable Life, Finland
31 March 2025
Tampere Future Arena of Sustainable Life was a transition arena that was organised in the Autumn of 2024. The arena workshop process engaged a big number of local associations, cooperatives, cultural actors, individuals as well as representatives from many city departments and local decision-makers from different political parties. The process included a visioning workshop for residents, a wider visioning workshop with 60 participants as well as a pathway and a solution workshop with 40 participants. The topic “sustainable life” is related to both people and nature.
The Tampere Future Arena enabled a constructive, politically neutral discussion between local actors and the city about the core elements of sustainable future from the grassroot perspective. It also led into various concrete actions and most of all, it empowered new cooperation and positive hope for the future.
As a major result, a new cooperation model between the city and local actors – “a platform for sustainable life”- was created. The platform will be piloted in an empty urban space to enhance community building, sustainable lifestyle and human connection with nature. Also a concept of a “biodiversity centre” will be launched to gather biodiversity knowledge and build a network of voluntary-based “biodiversity ambassadors” around the city. Actions were also taken to strengthen the visibility of second hand and repair services, alongside with recommendations for the city to improve civic participation in urban planning.
Key messages and actions are taken forward with the participants and in further discussions with the city. The results will, among others, have an impact on the local Biodiversity Programme.
