Tallinn pilot

A modern and sustainable kindergarten in Tallinn
The building where the kindergarten is planned, used to be a villa owned by the director of the textile factory, located at Manufaktuuri st 6 in the northern Tallinn district, Estonia. The factory operated between 1898 and 2006, the villa was an architectural landmark in the factory complex. Unfortunately, the villa was burned down in 2019, so only the foundation has remained.
The general goal of this pilot is to prepare for the construction of a sustainable new building using less toxic substances and building materials and energy-efficient solutions.
As a first step, an architectural competition was held. The aim was to focus on using more wood in construction and improving indoor conditions for children. Criteria included:
- reduce hazardous chemicals in building materials that come into contact with people (interior finishing materials) as well as the release of such chemicals into nature (exterior finishing);
- increase the climate neutrality of the building – smaller CO2-equivalent footprint;
- improving the circular economy – when choosing building materials, keep in mind their sustainability throughout the life cycle of the material, also taking into account low maintenance and maximizing the use.
With the winner, the architecture bureau Creatomus Solutions OÜ, the design contract signing is currently in process. Parallel market consultations are being carried out to understand which criteria could be set related to hazardous substances in construction materials available on the Estonian market. Additionally, a training on hazardous materials will be held for the architectural team.
The outcome of the pilot is a design contract for kindergarten construction, which includes criteria for using less hazardous construction materials.
