Renovation of parish house with innovative solutions

31 March 2025
Technical details

The project involves renovation of the parish house Maria Magdalenen in Hamburg, built 1969, with the area about 400 m² and consisting of two building parts: office, small meeting rooms and the big meeting room. The energy standard of the building is poor and there have been many problems with water due to leakages of the roof. So, the primary focus is on updating meeting rooms and addressing issues with the roof. The renovation will be carried out by Hamburg-based NHC3 project partner Auraplan Architects.

Four possible solutions are considered for the renovation:

  1. only renovation without improving the energy standard,
  2. major renovation of the roof with improving the energy standard,
  3. green roof with improving the energy standard,
  4. construction of a new storey on top of the office wing.

It was decided to proceed with option 4 in combination with option 1. The current challenge involves addressing structural limitations, as the building’s load-bearing elements are not strong enough to support a green roof or a second storey. However, it is feasible to create a new load-bearing system for the additional storey, which has been approved. The next step is to assess the need for a second storey and determine how the building should be reorganized.

Additionally, the team is planning solar panels and temporary protection for the roof and basement. They are reviewing product data (SafetyData Sheets, Environmental Product Declarations, Byggvarubedömningen (BVB) database) for potential materials.

The most important stakeholders are the parishioners. They are regularly informed by newsletters and got the opportunity to participate in the planning process by parish events. Financial decisions are taken by the parish council, they also set the frame and the ambitions of a renovation project.
