UEFA EURO Fan Zone 2024 with Public Viewing

Technical details

In collaboration with the Change(K)now! project partner Green Events Hamburg the UEFA EURO 2024 Fan Zone with public viewing tested numerous sustainability measures. With more than 600,000 visitors overall, among other things, the introduction of a comprehensive reusable system for food and beverage packaging was a core element of the strategy during the event.

Measures tested:

Exclusive ban of single-use packaging (plates and cups)
Test new service provider for food packaging and rinsing
Central return station with return incentives
Volunteer program that supervises and informs the return stations and waste bins

Aim:

To implement and test reusable solutions in large-scale events, by reducing the amount of waste and CO2 emissions.

Results:
The Fan Zone demonstrated that reusable systems can operate successfully at very large events with international audiences. The approach prevented approximately 348,000 disposable cups and 30,000 disposable food containers during the event.
