Hydrogen pilot for winter maintenance at Helsinki Airport has been launched
30 January 2026
As part of the BSR HyAirport project, Helsinki Airport has launched a month‑long hydrogen pilot to explore the potential of hydrogen for winter maintenance. Since early January 2026, a temporary hydrogen refuelling station has been operating on the airport apron, enabling Finavia to test a Hyzon hydrogen‑powered maintenance truck equipped with a plow and brush blower in real winter conditions on the airside. The experience provides valuable insights into performance, reliability, and emissions reduction where electrification is challenging.
“Utilising hydrogen could in the future become an important part of airports’ energy transition. Through this pilot, we are developing our expertise in hydrogen handling and gaining practical experience of how the technology performs in winter conditions in an airport environment,” says Sami Kiiskinen, Development Director at Finavia’s Helsinki Airport.
The pilot brings together experienced Finavia maintenance drivers and technical experts working with vehicle fleets. Green hydrogen is supplied by P2X Solutions from its new Harjavalta production facility, while the refuelling equipment is provided by MP Logistiikka from Pori. The vehicle, leased from Zerobus in Estonia, will continue trials at other BSR airports after the Helsinki pilot.
