Pilot 17: XR Mind Map

Extended Reality (XR) is a growing field focused on immersive experiences, including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). While some refer to “Metaverse technologies,” this project uses the term XR for its clarity and simplicity.

Though still relatively small, XR has rapidly advanced and is projected to become a multi-billion-euro industry by 2030 (EU Commission, 2022). XR could be a transformative technology, changing how digital content is consumed, much like the Internet or smartphones. Governments and industries are exploring XR to secure a competitive edge if it becomes the next major tech disruption.

Gaming and digital entertainment have been early adopters of XR, with game developers benefiting from overlapping skills and tools. However, XR is a vast and complex field, making it challenging for newcomers to learn. To address this, the XR Mindmap was created as a visual, curated learning tool. It helps users explore XR technologies, industry reports, tools, networks, and more, with a focus on clarity and accessibility.

The XR Mindmap is designed to allow users to easily navigate the XR industry, from main categories like technology, design, and ecosystems to subtopics like tools and networks. It caters to diverse users—designers, developers, CEOs, and funders—enabling each to focus on the most relevant information. For example, developers might explore XR tools, while business leaders might focus on ecosystems and networks.

Specialists in the XR industry contributed to ensure the Mindmap’s quality and relevance. It includes a dedicated section on XR gaming, an emerging market within the field. Overall, the XR Mindmap serves as a valuable resource for understanding XR and onboarding people and businesses into this dynamic industry.
