Klaipėda, Lithuania
18 February 2025
Klaipėda is the third largest city and the only port in Lithuania. BATS Partner Klaipėda Public Transport Authority is a competence center for the regional sustainable mobility and transport sector, and participates in the project with the aim of drawing attention to and improving the popularity of active mobility in Klaipėda.
Within the BATS project, Klaipėda Public Transport Authority will run two experiments in the city.
Bike Path Lightening
Recent surveys in Klaipėda exploring the factors that would encourage increased cycling amongst the population show that 48% of respondents believe it is important to improve local traffic safety. In relation, the provision of path lighting was identified as a key factor in increasing the number of active mobility users.
The challenge for Klaipėda Public Transport Authority is to increase the usage of bicycles in variable weather conditions, and the first BATS experiment will focus on the installation of display lights that reflect in the snow or any other road surface. This type of installation is expected to increase traffic safety in the area, which has been identified as an influential factor impacting the usage of bicycles during the winter season.
Monitoring the bicycle path pavement condition
Another way in which the Klaipėda Public Transport Authority can improve traffic safety around the pilot experiment location is through the installation of a weather monitoring system. This experiment will install a weather station used to monitor the surface condition of the pavement, displaying real-time information on a dashboard and online, thus allowing the Authority to gauge how real-time information increases traffic safety and influences the number of cyclists in the local area.
