Kalundborg, Denmark
21 November 2024
Kalundborg is an active port city located on the west coast of Zealand, Denmark, by the Great Belt.
The city is currently experiencing explosive growth in both industry and educational institutions. Congestion on the road network in and around Kalundborg is severe, and efforts are being made to alleviate this pressure. One focus area is to encourage commuters from the surrounding area to switch from using cars to cycling to work—and importantly, to do so year-round.
Within the BATS project, Kalundborg Municipality will run three main pilot activities.
Firstly, Kalundborg will aim to improve the comfort and traffic safety for cyclists and pedestrians in all weather conditions through the design of appropriate facilities. The pilot intervention will focus on the design and testing of innovative facilities aimed at improving the convenience for cyclists in adverse environments by establishing a continuous bicycle connection between Kalundborg City and the Biotech City Campus, a route that is used all year round.
A series of enhancements to existing infrastructure will be provided on the route, including improved separation between cyclists and cars, clearer markings on bike lanes, improved shelters, and the availability of services for cyclists. Kalundborg Municipality will also provide clear signage to influence commuter behaviour and improve the quality of available information to local travellers.
Secondly, Kalundborg Municipality is running a pilot activity to improve the bike lane lighting on the same route. The stretch being targeted in the intervention is short, but has very poor existing lighting, leading to difficulties and safety concerns during dark hours. This stretch of the heavily-used route between Kalundborg City Centre and the Biotech City Campus is perceived as unsafe during darkness, with reports that cyclists will not use this certain stretch as a result. With an increase in dark hours during winter months, it is hoped that this lighting enhancement will result in an uptake of YRAM users.
The third pilot activity being run by Kalundborg Municipality is related to citizen activation, and will see the rollout of a campaign to increase the willingness of citizens to cycle all year round, while drawing attention to the improvements made to the bicycle connection between the city centre and Biotech City Campus.
These activities will see Kalundborg Municipality introduce a number of activities aimed at encouraging citizens to use their bikes throughout the year. Traditional campaigns will be utilised, including street banners, press coverage, and social media. Additionally, the loan of electric charging bicycles will be offered for a limited period, and the creation of a bicycle cafe established in collaboration with a local social economy enterprise. Kalundborg Municipality will target local students upon the commencement of their studies, providing a bike map featuring important locations across the city alongside access to Cyclebazar, with cheap secondhand bikes and a half year off bike service.
