Kalundborg, Denmark
21 November 2024
Kalundborg is an active port city located on the west coast of Zealand, Denmark, by the Great Belt.
The city is currently experiencing explosive growth in both industry and educational institutions. Congestion on the road network in and around Kalundborg is severe, and efforts are being made to alleviate this pressure. One focus area is to encourage commuters from the surrounding area to switch from using cars to cycling to work—and importantly, to do so year-round.
Providing Kalundborg’s ‘Missing Link’
The BATS activities in Kalundborg will see the implementation of a new ‘metro map’ alongside upgraded lighting on cycle routes – making it safer and easier for citizens to choose cycling all year round. Through the project, the Kalundborg team wishes to create a city where cycling is a natural choice – all year round. The YRAM implementations are beneficial for health, climate and quality of life, and it is hoped that more citizens will take the bike when the infrastructure becomes more attractive and safer. Kalundborg Municipality is working hard to make cycling more attractive – even in the dark months.
Through the BATS project, Kalundborg Municipality has introduced a new initiative: ‘Kalundborg Cykelstrøg’ (Kalundborg Cycle Route), which provides a clear overview of the city’s most important hubs. The ‘metro map’ is located at several places along the route in the city and helps cyclists find the fastest and safest route from Station Øst to Munkesøen. To make the experience even better, the team has alsoestablished markings along the route that interact with the metro map, so cyclists can easily find their way along the route.
Light the Bike Lane
Kalundborg Municipality is also running a pilot activity to improve the bike lane lighting on the same route between Kalundborg City and the Biotech City Campus. The stretch being targeted in this experiment, Rynkevangen, is short, but has very poor existing lighting, leading to difficulties and safety concerns during dark hours.
This BATS experiment will focus on increasing safety through improved lighting on this dark section of the connection between Kalundborg City and the Biotech City Campus. With an increase in dark hours during winter months, it is hoped that this lighting enhancement will result in an uptake of YRAM users.
Campaign: Bike all yearÂ
In an attempt to combat the congestion throughout Kalundborg and encourage the switch from cars to active mobility methods, the Municipality is using the experience of the BATS project to run a campaign to increase citizen awareness and willingness to cycle all year round. Additionally, this campaign will draw attention to the bicycle connection between Kalundborg City and the Biotech City Campus, using the Danish national campaigns for students including Touring Together, Bike to Work, We Bike to Work, and Winterbiking.
Through these activities, Kalundborg Municipality hopes to understand how dedicated campaigns combined with infrastructure improvements can positively influence local attitudes towards YRAM.
