CircularFarmPlastics Workshop in Norway

The Future of Farm Plastics – From Farm to Recycling

5–8 October 2026

CircularFarmPlastics invites you to its first workshop in Norway.

All presentations will be delivered in English. Questions may be asked in Norwegian and will be translated by the moderator.

The programme is subject to change.

Over three days, we follow agricultural plastics through the value chain, from collection on the farm to recycling and the development of new circular products. The workshop aims to build networks, share knowledge and experience, and encourage innovation and the development of new solutions.

Join us for farm visits and demonstrations of equipment that can make plastic handling easier. Hear what researchers from NIVA and NIBIO have discovered about plastics in soil, and learn how biodegradable plastics perform under Nordic conditions.

The programme is open to everyone. You can choose to attend the full programme or selected sessions, such as the farm visits featuring demonstrations of plastic balers. Some sessions have limited capacity, as indicated in the registration form. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participation is free of charge. Participants must cover their own travel and accommodation costs.

How can managing agricultural plastic become easier in a busy farming day? We visit two farms using hydraulic balers and explore how the farmers handle their plastic, from use and sorting to compaction and delivery for recycling. They share their experiences with investment, time, costs and what it takes to make these solutions work in practice.

Farm 1:

Ole-Andreas Kinnsbekken, Kløfta – managing plastic on a cereal and dairy farm

At Ole-Andreas Kinnsbekken’s farm, we see how plastic from cereal and dairy production is sorted, stored and compacted using a hydraulic baler. Why did he choose this solution, and how has it affected work on the farm? We explore practical routines and experiences with keeping plastic clean, transport and delivery for recycling.

Farm 2:

Ingemund Tjelmeland, Leirsund – integrating a plastic baler into everyday farm operations

At Ingemund Tjelmeland’s dairy farm, we learn how a hydraulic baler fits into the farm’s plastic management routines. He demonstrates his setup and shares what works well, the challenges involved and what other farmers should consider before choosing a similar solution.

Expert presentations and hands-on demonstration

During the farm visits, Fredrik Stenseth Ruud from Felleskjøpet discusses different types of plastic, product choices and key considerations for both use and recycling. He also presents efforts to increase the recycled plastic content of products.

Charles from Eco-nor demonstrates a mechanical plastic baler, with an opportunity for participants to try it themselves. There will be time for questions, discussion and sharing experiences of the solutions on display.

13:10 NIBIO – presentation Biodegradable mulch films: Benefits, limitations and lessons from Norwegian field studies. Claire Coutris,NIBIO, included Q&A, group discussions.

Recovering and recycling agricultural mulch films can be costly and difficult because the plastics are often contaminated with soil, plant and pesticide residues. Biodegradable mulch films offer a potential alternative, but what happens when they are left in the field? Using examples from Norwegian field and laboratory studies, this presentation will explore how biodegradable mulch films degrade in soil, how they interact with pesticides, and what this means for the use of agricultural plastics in a circular economy.

This session will provide a basis for discussion among project partners on experiences with biodegradable and conventional mulch films across different agricultural, environmental and waste-management contexts.

Practical information:

If you want to travel from X-Hotel to Oslo city center: Take bus number 380 from the Hellerud bus stop to Oslo Bus Terminal. The trip takes about 35 minutes, and buses run every 30 minutes.

The easiest way to get from Oslo Gardermoen Airport to X Hotel is by the airport shuttle bus (FB1). The bus departs every hour at quarter past the hour from platform 11. The journey takes approximately 25 minutes to the X Meeting Point stop.The return trip to the airport 08 oct is also by airport shuttle bus. The bus departs from Hellerud at 13:19 and arrives at the airport at approximately 14:00.  https://www.flybussen.no/en
