BATS Webinar: Why Don't They Go By Night? Integrating Women's Needs Into YRAM

Project: BATS
Virtual event
The BATS Webinar series shines a special spotlight on International Women's Day 2026.

Description

During the next installation of the BATS Webinar series, discover how cities can make cycling and walking safer, more inclusive, and more attractive for everyone - especially during dark hours and in wintertime.

Together with leading experts, we will explore how women's needs and experiences can be better integrated into year-round active mobility (YRAM) approaches, and what this means for planning, infrastructure, and policymaking across Europe and beyond.

The session will highlight gender-sensitive approaches to urban planning and mobility, focusing not only on actual safety measures, but also on perceived safety - and how feelings of comfort, visibility, and confidence in public space influence whether people choose to walk or cycle when it's dark, quiet, or icy. We will explore strategies to strengthen (perceived) safety in cycling and walking infrastructure across different cultural contexts, and discuss what support is needed from cities, NGOs, and other stakeholders to drive progress at EU level.

The exact programme is currently being finalised, but we are pleased to share two inspiring contributions already:

  • Laurianne Krid - CEO of the European Cyclists' Federation will share insights on current developments at EU level and explore how gender-sensitive planning can support women to cycle and walk year-round, including during winter and at night.
  • Linda Gustafsson - Gender Equality Strategist at the City of Umeå  will present how Umeå  has worked with gender equality in urban planning for many years, showcasing practical examples from planning, infrastructure, and mobility and how this work has resonated across Europe.

Join us for an engaging discussion and take away concrete ideas for making year-round walking and cycling more equitable, safe, and accessible.

International Women's Day (IWD), celebrated annually on March 8, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for advancing gender equality.

This webinar is organised through the BATS project, which focuses on promoting walking and cycling all year round.
