Description

Invitation to WaterMan & ERB Water Core Group Dialogue Forum

Water Recycling in the Baltic Sea Region – Practical Examples and Way Forward

Once considered mainly a challenge for southern regions, water resilience has, over the past decades, become an urgent issue in the Baltic Sea Region as well. Accelerated by climate change, increasingly extreme shifts in precipitation patterns now result in periods of either too much or too little water, at times causing severe challenges for local water supply. An effective way to respond to these challenges is water recycling, especially when it combines the reuse of municipal wastewater, recycling loops that recirculate water of different qualities within households and industrial facilities, and the retention and recirculation of rainwater in meaningful and locally-adapted ways.

Since January 2023, 15 institutions from six countries have jointly developed a Baltic Sea Region-specific approach for water recycling that uses all these three pillars to stabilise local water supply within the Interreg Baltic Sea Region project WaterMan – and have succeeded to bring it into everyday practice. The Dialogue Forum will give local, regional and national water management stakeholders from Sweden and the Baltic Sea Region the opportunity to exchange with the members of the project team on the lessons learnt in this process, and to explore the water recycling measures in the WaterMan partner region Kalmar County on the spot and in reality.

The 1,5 day agenda will include, inter alia:

  • Plenary sessions with presentations of project results and discussions on the way forward for promoting water recycling in the Baltic Sea Region
  • On-site visits to the WaterMan pilot measures in Kalmar and Västervik, as well as the new Water Recycling Plant “Kalmarsundsverket” (scheduled to open in 2028)
  • Opportunities to meet the hands-on experts of the WaterMan project team from all six partner countries in person for hands-on advice on how to get started with water recycling.
