BSR Urban Mobility Strengthens Cooperation Across Europe

03 November 2026
Technical details

During autumn 2026, the BSR Urban Mobility platform took part in a series of major European mobility events, bringing together cities, regions, mobility experts and policymakers. These events helped share results from the platform projects, spark new ideas and connect people working towards more sustainable and efficient transport systems across Europe and the Baltic Sea Region. Just as importantly, the discussions and lessons learned at these events will help shape the BSR Urban Mobility Policy Framework and guide future training activities for mobility professionals across the region.

Continuing the Legacy of SUMPs for BSR and BATS Projects

The platform was represented on stage and at a booth at Baltic Active Mobility 2026 conference.

At the Baltic Active Mobility 2026 conference in Gdynia, BSR Urban Mobility was presented as a continuation of the work started by the SUMPs for BSR project and its Baltic Sea Region SUMP Competence Centre. The event gave a glimpse into how the platform builds on earlier achievements of several projects and helps cities make use of proven methods, tools and experiences.

Exploring Data-Driven Mobility Planning in Oslo

At the EIT Urban Mobility North Summit in Oslo, BSR Urban Mobility organised a workshop focusing on data discussing it from several perspectives. One clear message emerged from the discussions: cities already collect large amounts of mobility data, but difficulties in sharing information, limited resources and unclear responsibilities often prevent them from making full use of it. Participants called for practical solutions that would help cities use existing data more effectively and make better-informed decisions.

Showcasing Results at CIVITAS Forum 2026 in Thessaloniki

The current status of SUMPs and SULPs in the Baltic Sea Region was presented to the participants across Europe.

BSR Urban Mobility also took part in CIVITAS Forum 2026 in Thessaloniki. As a side event, the platform organised a workshop on integrating urban logistics into Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans. Participants agreed that urban logistics should not be treated as a separate topic but as a natural part of urban mobility planning. Discussions focused on better freight data, closer cooperation between different actors and practical ways to address growing pressure on urban space.

BSR Urban Mobility also joined a panel discussion on how cities and regions can turn mobility strategies into real action. The survey results of Survey on Sustainable Urban Mobility and Logistics Planning in Baltic Sea Region were introduced briefly to the participants. One message stood out throughout the discussion: successful mobility planning depends as much on cooperation and governance as it does on technical solutions.

Bringing Baltic Sea Region Perspectives to Connecting Europe Days in Brussels

In the dialogue session the participants got to hear about the Estonian SUMP contact point’s activities.

BSR Urban Mobility participated in Connecting Europe Days, where the platform was pitched as part of the official programme to transport professionals and decision-makers from across Europe.

The platform organised a dialogue session as a side event focusing on urban nodes, sustainable mobility planning and the revised TEN-T Regulation in collaboration with POLIS network. The discussions focused on how cities are adapting to their new responsibilities and kind of support do they still need.

A key message from the workshop was that urban nodes sit at the heart of TEN-T corridors but are still not sufficiently involved in corridor governance and decision-making. Participants highlighted the need for stronger communication, clearer roles and better alignment between TEN-T objectives, local mobility plans and investment priorities. Discussions also pointed to the importance of funding instruments that better support urban mobility projects and recognise the value of smaller-scale investments.

First Active Mobility Workshop Shed Some Light to Winter Conditions

The Planning for Year-Round Active Mobility workshop, held in October 2026, brought cities and mobility practitioners together to exchange experiences and identify practical ways to improve walking and cycling throughout the year. Discussions highlighted winter maintenance, real-time information, user feedback, and better coordination between municipal departments and service providers as important areas for action.
In the workshop, participants identified data collection and monitoring, maintenance practices, and climate adaptation as the top three areas for further cooperation between cities and regions. They also stressed the need for funding, political commitment, knowledge sharing, and clearer standards to mainstream year-round active mobility.

Looking Ahead

The events of autumn 2026 helped BSR Urban Mobility expand its network, share results from the platform projects with new audiences and strengthen connections across Europe.

The insights gathered through these events will feed directly into the development of the BSR Urban Mobility Policy Framework and help shape future workshops, training sessions and learning activities. By listening to the challenges and opportunities identified by cities, regions and mobility experts, the platform can ensure that its future work remains practical, relevant and useful for those working to improve mobility across the Baltic Sea Region.

In the coming months, BSR Urban Mobility will continue organising workshops, training events and discussions that help turn project results into practical action. If you would like to stay informed about upcoming activities, join our mailing list and become part of a growing network of mobility professionals working towards more sustainable transport systems across the Baltic Sea Region.

The dialogue event sparked up some great discussion regarding urban nodes.
