Poznań Airport tests hydrogen in cargo handling
30 September 2026
As part of the BSR HyAirport project, Poznań Airport has launched a pilot activity to test how green hydrogen can support more sustainable airport cargo operations. The research environment is located within the operational area of the airport’s Cargo Terminal. The pilot examines the entire hydrogen value chain, from production using electricity from the airport’s photovoltaic installation to hydrogen compression, storage, refuelling and use in ground handling equipment.
Two Linde electric forklifts have been adapted to operate with a universal, modular Plug-and-Play fuel cell power pack, allowing the project team to evaluate hydrogen performance under real operating conditions. The trials focus on operational efficiency and the practical integration of hydrogen technologies into airport logistics. A key advantage being assessed is the rapid refuelling process. Using a dedicated hydrogen dispenser, the forklifts can be refuelled within a few minutes, significantly reducing downtime compared to conventional battery charging.
The pilot will generate valuable technical and operational insights, which will be documented and shared with airports across the Baltic Sea Region. Through real-life testing, the BSR HyAirport project is helping to advance knowledge on hydrogen applications in airport logistics and support the transition towards more sustainable airport operations.
