BalticBlue Corridor Platform Project Kick Off Held in Turku, Finland
On 8-9 September, maritime experts gathered in Turku, Finland, to launch the BalticBlue Corridor Platform, a new initiative bringing together cutting-edge digital solutions and maritime safety innovations to support the future of shipping in the Baltic Sea Region.

Maritime authorities, research institutions, and emergency preparedness experts have joined forces in the BalticBlue Corridor Platform Project, co-funded by Interreg Baltic Sea Region, to transform years of research and innovation into practical solutions for safer, more resilient, and more sustainable maritime transport.
The partnership includes the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA), Turku University of Applied Sciences (Turku UAS), Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK), the Danish Emergency Management Agency (DEMA), Kotka Maritime Research Association (KMRA), and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Together, the partners address the growing need for reliable, secure, and environmentally sustainable shipping across the Baltic Sea Region.
As maritime operations face increasing challenges, the BalticBlue Platform responds by building on the achievements of leading EU-funded projects, including MaDaMe, ORMOBASS, Baltic Sea eNav, R-Mode Baltic, OpenRisk II, BRISK II, WATERWAYS, DIGIMARIS, MARISEC, Sustainable Flow, NEMO EMSW, ISTLAB, and Efficient Flow. Together, these projects have advanced resilient positioning, digital navigation services, risk assessment, emergency preparedness, and operational efficiency across the Baltic Sea Region. BalticBlue’s role is to connect these achievements, increase their visibility, and support their wider adoption in practice.
“The BalticBlue project has the potential to make it much easier for professionals and organizations to identify and utilize the valuable digital navigation tools and services developed in previous projects,” said Turku UAS Chief Advisor Tero Jokela. “What I enjoy most about this project is the opportunity to collaborate with an exceptional group of experts.”
Through international cooperation, stakeholder engagement, and expert workshops, BalticBlue will develop recommendations and raise awareness around existing and services to strengthen maritime safety, improve operational resilience, and support efficient navigation throughout the region. Over the coming months, the project will engage maritime authorities, industry representatives, researchers, and policymakers across the Baltic Sea Region, helping shape the next generation of safe, sustainable, and digitally connected maritime transport.
