Joint Session of munitions projects at the EU BSRS Annual Forum in Tallinn

During the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region Annual Forum 2026 in Tallinn, we had the pleasure of co-organising a special panel session “”𝐇𝐢𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 ‘𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬’ 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐒𝐑 – 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐚: 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬, 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬”.

The session was prepared in cooperation with partners from European projects BaltWreck, MMinE-SwEEPER, MUNIMAP, ENDURE and MUNIRISK, all of which share a common focus on addressing hazards posed by wrecks and underwater munitions remaining on the seabed.

The panelists included:

– Adam Cenian – Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery, Polish Academy of Sciences (IMP PAN)
– Erik Hanstein – Umweltbundesamt – German Environment Agency
– Marcin Żuchowski – Stowarzyszenie Gmin RP Euroregion Bałtyk

The discussion focused on a key issue for all of us: how to effectively and safely neutralize the risks posed by shipwrecks and munitions lying on the Baltic Sea floor. The panel combined a high level of technical and scientific expertise with an accessible way of presenting complex topics. The session was opened by an inspiring lecture delivered by Louise Floman, Coordinator of EUSBSR PA Hazards, and the entire event was moderated by Katarzyna Fidler, Coordinator of the MUNIMAP project.

The meeting showed that the “hidden treasures” of the Baltic Sea are not a metaphor, but a real environmental challenge requiring continuous cooperation, exchange of experience, and joint action across the entire region.
