Media information about the Final Conference
26 November 2025
Schwerin, 26 November 2025 – “Green industrial areas open up new opportunities in the Baltic Sea region. They are lighthouse projects on the path toward transforming our industrial sites. In our green industrial areas, the green electricity produced here in Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania is used efficiently, creating new value added directly at our locations.” This was stated yesterday (25 November 2025) by Dr. Wolfgang Blank, Minister for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour, at the final conference of the Interreg project GreenIndustrialAreas. According to Dr. Blank, the cross-border project is of great importance for the regional economy and the sustainable development of Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania.
Interreg projects are cross-border EU funding initiatives that support regions across Europe in jointly developing solutions. The Interreg project GreenIndustrialAreas started in January 2023 and will conclude in December of this year. Within the framework of the project, partners from seven countries (Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland) developed a transnational certification standard and a toolbox to promote the energy transition of commercial and industrial areas in the Baltic Sea region.
From 25 to 26 November 2025, around 70 experts from business, science and public administration met in Schwerin to present the results of the Interreg project GreenIndustrialAreas and to discuss future perspectives for the sustainable development of industrial areas in the Baltic Sea region. This includes the new transnational standard for the sustainable development of industrial areas in the Baltic Sea region developed by the project partners, as well as a toolbox featuring best-practice examples for interested municipalities and stakeholders. In addition, the project partners presented the pilot sites during a poster session, where the developed approaches have already been successfully tested.
Currently, there are three green industrial areas in Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania, located in Grevesmühlen, Hagenow and Parchim. The designation of additional areas is currently being prepared. Furthermore, potential studies for commercial and industrial areas are being carried out by an external institute.
