Clinical AI Workshop at EATRIS Summer School: A Collaborative Learning Experience
04 November 2025
During the EATRIS Summer School in Slovenia, held from 22–24 September, a three-hour workshop on CAIDX’s Clinical AI Pathway Toolbox gathered 31 participants from across Europe. The workshop was organised within the framework of development and implement AI in healthcare aimed to provide participants with a practical understanding of the process through an interactive, stakeholder-based approach.

The session was structured around a realistic use case on chronic pancreatitis diagnosis, one of the use cases in CAIDX. This example served as a concrete point of reference and allowed participants to translate theoretical concepts into practical reflections on how AI tools can support diagnostic processes in clinical contexts. The case effectively demonstrated the multi-faceted nature of AI innovation in healthcare, encompassing not only technical and clinical aspects but also ethical, regulatory, and organisational dimensions.
Stakeholder Collaboration and Key Learnings
Participants were divided into groups representing key stakeholder roles — clinicians, data engineers, regulatory and legal experts, company, as well as project managers. Each group was guided through the six phases of the Clinical AI Pathway Guide: idea, concept, development, validation, launch, and deployment. Within each phase, each stakeholder group discussed reflections related to their specific stakeholder perspective and exchanged insights on how collaboration between roles is essential for success.
The participants were highly engaged throughout the session. Feedback indicated that the use of a concrete case example was particularly valuable in supporting understanding and discussion. The exercise enabled participants to identify the interdependencies between stakeholders and to appreciate how each contributes uniquely to the safe and effective implementation of AI technologies in healthcare. Many highlighted that the workshop format encouraged active dialogue and critical thinking across disciplinary boundaries.
Outcomes and Future Perspectives
Overall, the workshop achieved its intended learning outcomes. Participants gained a deeper understanding of how diverse expertise must be integrated to realise AI solutions that are clinically relevant, ethically sound, and practically deployable. The format proved to be both effective and well-received, offering a dynamic learning environment that bridged theory and practice.
Given the positive engagement and the high educational value, both participants and organisers concluded that this workshop format should be repeated in future training events to continue fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and responsible innovation within clinical AI. It will also increase the sustainability of CAIDX after project end in Q4 2025.
