Summary: Almedalen 2025 – Blue Supply Chains Advancing Fossil-Free Transport

30 June 2025
The Blue Supply Chains project participated in Almedalsveckan 2025, Sweden’s leading platform for political and industry dialogue, on June 25 and 26. Hosted by our partners, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and Lindholmen Science Park, the project facilitated two seminars and a roundtable discussion to advance the transition to fossil-free transport in shipping and aviation. Below is a summary of the key outcomes.
Technical details

June 24: Roundtable Discussion

A roundtable discussion, held at Restaurang Eden on Stora Torget, fostered in-depth dialogue on fossil-free shipping. Participants, including Linda Styhre and Karl Jivén (IVL), shared perspectives over a meal. The discussion, grounded in Blue Supply Chains’ project results, highlighted:

  • Sweden’s capacity to scale up renewable fuel production, potentially eliminating fossil fuel imports.

  • The need for collective action across stakeholders to overcome barriers and achieve shared goals.

June 25: Seminar – Renewable Fuels for Future Shipping

The seminar Renewable Fuels for Future Shipping – When Will We Reach the Finish Line? explored Sweden’s potential to lead in renewable fuel production. Moderated by Camilla Sundqvist, the panel included Linda Styhre and Karl Jivén (IVL) alongside representatives from the Swedish Parliament, ports, energy companies, and industry. Key insights included:

  • Sweden’s access to fossil-free energy and innovative enterprises positions it as a leader in bio- and electro-fuels.

  • Effective collaboration among policymakers, ports, energy companies, and industry is essential to establish a viable market for renewable fuels.

  • While challenges persist, there is a strong commitment to reducing oil dependency and achieving climate objectives.

The session is available for replay here.

June 26: Seminar – Västerbotten and Sweden’s Energy Transition

The seminar Västerbotten and the Next Phase of Sweden’s Energy Transition examined Västerbotten’s potential as a hub for fossil-free transport. The session focused on:

  • Västerbotten’s role in producing renewable electro-fuels for shipping and aviation.

  • The importance of innovative business models and regional production to support climate goals and economic growth.

  • The critical role of ports as nodes in sustainable supply chains.
